Is two years too long to fulfill a promise?

Twenty-two months ago we walked on top of the hills of La Jolla, and explored the bottom of remote Pottery Canyon.  It looked like this, when decorated by my Elan.

I said we would come back and finish the walk, someday.

Well, today after a stroll in town, we returned to finish our trek from the top.

High on a hillside above the exclusive beach town of La Jolla (host to a number of watch boutiques, including Westime and CJ Charles) is an open gap in the homes that are sprinkled expensively (median price $3M) on every buildable patch. A few modern places, including the sunken roof wonder:

A lovely traditional California / Spanish home.

We had to go pay a call on a friend of my wife's then cruised around a bit in La Jolla. We came upon the sign by accident, and here is the western view from the top of Pottery Canyon Open Space.

We cruised down the hill for a few hundred yards.

We spotted the ranch where the guy lives who owns this fork of the canyon. His family has been there 76 years.

There's a very steep cliff just beyond this utility pole, where the hillside drops into the canyon. The wires virtually fall right down to where my Lotus was parked before. We decided not to fall today.

Everything seemed to be in bloom!

Of course my eagle-eyed wife spotted a hummingbird.

I captured it on camera and got a bonus bird flying just above us.

Even the smallest plants were competing for bee attention (too small for a hummer, I'm sure).

The soil here is sandy and hard.

How can those tiny plants compete against this iceplant? Smaller bees, perhaps?

We eventually climbed back to the top, crossed the road, and looked eastward. In the distance we could see the canyon and hillside in Clairemont, where we walked last week.

Looking northward across the University Center area of biotech research firms. The hillside below was extremely steep and covered with stickery weeds.
We refrained from sliding down the hill (this time). Maybe we will come back later and cover the rest of this wilderness patch...

While to our immediate left was an enormous brick church.

We decided to head home for a late lunch.

Avocado, shrimp and pepper salad, on crispy duck skin chips, shredded duck, red cabbage with apples, and Yukon gold and red yams. Not shown, mimosas.

Thanks for walking with us today.

But imagine calling the glass store and saying "I need a front window please. Boys in the neighborhood broke it with a baseball..."

I didnā€™t fully appreciate the density of homes and everything else included in that area from the street views you sometimes provide. Iā€™m guessing this is all related to proximity to the water, but still with that level of packed development, most houses ...

As to the density, itā€™s exclusivity, panache, wealthy birds flock together, etc. Value about $4M ...

Now that is some serious woodwork šŸ˜®

Iā€™m intrigued by the architectural imagination and technical ambition to execute at this level. Iā€™m sure thereā€™s likely something more to the outer roof materials that I canā€™t tell e.g. they contain energy generating solar panels, wind turbine, or other c...
